RIBBLESDALE Wanderers’ dreams of a Lancashire Cup quarter-final derby showdown with cross-town rivals Clitheroe were dashed yesterday as they were beaten by Denton West.
The Lancashire County League side piled up 253-5 from their 45 overs with John McAllister making 75 not out.
That was always going to be a tall order for Charlie Jackson’s men and they needed a big score from Ben Dougall.
But he could only make 16 and they were 156 all out.
The cup tie meant Wanderers’ clash with Cherry Tree will now be played next Sunday but there were two upsets in yesterday’s Ribblesdale League programme – and those upsets boosted Clitheroe’s hopes of retaining the title.
Great Harwood, who were second after Saturday, were beaten at Brinscall, while Whalley suffered a second defeat of the weekend as they lost to Earby.
And while the two challengers were stumbling, Clitheroe were beating Padiham by 32 runs at Chatburn Road.
Needing 202 for a shock win, Padiham slipped to 169 all out.
Whalley lost at Earby despite a big show from Wilkin Mota, who made a half-century in their 161-5. He then claimed six wickets but that effort counted for nothing as Matt Wilson made 53 and Earby edged to a two-wicket win.
The biggest shock came at School Lane as Brinscall ended Great Harwood’s nine-match winning run. Jack Edgar and Russ Whalley both made 47 as Harwood were bowled out for 141 and then Brinscall eased to a four-wicket win.
South African sub-pro Rudi Second gave a first class delivery as he filled in for Read in the win at Baxenden.
The Chevrolet Knight made a brilliant 94 not out to lead Read to a five-wicket win after a five-wicket haul from Omatr Hussain – and three wickets from Second – saw Bash bowled out for 155.
Susantha Pradeep made a century as Salesbury beat Oswaldtwistle Immanuel. The Sri Lanka made 102 out of 227 all out and that was too many for a weakened Immanuel.
Settle were easy winners over Euxton, while a fine 117 from Tim Stephens was not enough to earn Brooksbottom a win over Barnoldswick.
Barlick’s thrilling run chase saw them win the match by five wickets.
