DARWEN go into their big weekend looking to put Sunday’s TWP Wealth Twenty20 finals day to one side as they bid to get back on track in the Chorley Building Society Northern League after losing the lead in a mixed June.
The Towers aim to be the perfect hosts for the league’s short form showpiece when they do battle with Blackpool, Lancaster and defending champions Netherfield for the honour of the first silverware on Sunday.
But before then they aim to bring a halt to the St Annes juggernaut when they head to the seaside for tomorrow’s league clash at Verbon Road.
Darwen began June as league leaders but have slipped from pole position, although last Sunday’s big win over Lancaster kept them in fourth place and well in touch with the top three.
And they make the trip to face St Annes without the in-form Neil Cordingley, who faces a spell on the sidelines after breaking his thumb in two places in the win over Lancaster.
Losing Cordingley is a blow but professional George Linde is in top form for the Towers and his brilliant 90 paved the way for last weekend’s win over the Bombers.
The game at St Annes, whose professional and former Rawtenstall and Accrington man Toby Bulcock is in prime form for both his club and Cumberland in the Minor Counties Championship, is guaranteed to be tough.
But at least they won’t be facing ex-England star Andrew Flintoff.
The former Lancashire man is making a cricketing comeback and has turned out for St Annes already this term.
There was speculation that he could play tomorrow but he has not been included in Andy Kellett’s team.
Chorley also face a big weekend of their own as they look to propel themselves back up the table as Barrow visit Windsor Park.
Andy Holdworth’s men made a bright start to the season but have slipped away in recent weeks and are now in 10th spot.
They face a Barrow side who are not living up to expectations as they eye victory after a blank weekend.
