DELIGHTED Ribblesdale Wanderers skipper Charlie Jackson believes his band of youngsters can turn their outstanding cup form into league success after they pulled off a result that caught the attention of the north west on Sunday.
Wanderers, who have only won twice in the league this season, travelled to face mighty Bootle in the second round of the LCB Lancashire Cup on Sunday.
They were big underdogs on their Mersey mission against a side including Lancashire and England star Stephen Parry and fellow big name Premier League cricketers Will Purser and David Snellgrove.
But they pulled off the result of the round as they stunned Bootle despite being bowled out for just 109.
They skittled the home side for 81 and Jackson, who is in his first season as Ribb skipper, grinned: “I am really made up.
“We had two young lads in Michael Clarkson and Charlie Collinge who really stepped up with the bat when Ben Dougall, John Rain and myself had failed and they did really well against a good bowling attack.
“They managed to get us up to 109 and that gave us a platform.
“Then Ian Britcliffe and Jake Sunderland bowled tremendously and kept it going and the other lads backed them up and it was a great result.
“And it’s a result that we can take so much from.
“Even if we had lost all the lads could have held their heads up high with that performance and now I hope we can take that into our league games.”
Wanderers poor start to the campaign has seen them slip to bottom of the Houldsworth Solicitors Ribblesdale League A Section but the skipper is sure they can now start to turn the corner.
“We are a young team and that’s the way I want it,” he said. “We do have the experience of Brits and John Rain and they are vital but it is also really important to bring the younger players through.
“And when the top order starts firing with the likes of me, Ben Dougall and Brannon Varley we can start racking up big scores and putting sides under pressure and winning games.”
