LANCASHIRE skipper Jasmine Titmuss believes that women’s cricket can continue to go from strength – and hopes that her Red Rose outfit can feel the benefit.
Titmuss leads her team into a County Championship doubler header at Worcester and Durham this weekend with high hopes of maintaining a 100 per cent start to the campaign after wins over Ireland and Somerset earlier this month.
The ultimate aim for Lancashire is to win promotion to the top flight after they were cruelly denied in the controversial play-offs last term, a system that has now been scrapped.
And with the women’s game on a high, Titmuss wants her troops to keep up the feelgood factor.
“The game is getting more publicity than ever and hopefully that will continue,” she said.
“Even in the time I have been playing it has developed and the crowds are getting better and better.
“It’s good for the sport and it would be a good year for us to get promoted.”
The winter’s Ashes success is one of the reasons for the rise in popularity and fast bowler Kate Cross is a key member of the Lancashire side.
She will play this weekend fresh from her appearance at Lord’s when the MCC played the Rest of the World in a star-studded game on Monday to celebrate 200 years of cricket at HQ.
“It’s great to have Crossy in the team,” added Titmuss.
“It’s not just on the field, it’s as much in the dressing room. People see her in the Ashes and playing at Lord’s and that boosts the profile.
“The younger girls can look up to her and she is becoming a role model.”
T the weekend, when Lancashire go to Worcester on Sunday before Monday’s game at Durham, Titmuss added: “We got off to an excellent start with the two wins and we want to keep that going this weekend.
“It’s a heavy schedule with all the travelling on a Bank Holiday but I am sure we will be fine if we can get a couple of wins.”
Titmuss will be fit after she received the all-clear on a finger injury and Lancashire travel with a full strength squad.
