SIX more wins and we could well be in the play-offs. Unfortunately we only have six games left to go this season and have so far been unable to string more than two wins together on the bounce.
So it seems a third season in the second flight is in the offing.
Saturday’s game was not one to savour but we got the job done.
Some of the problems of the four previous games, defensive frailties and vulnerability when in the lead, were pleasingly banished.
The first half was pretty even and apart from a couple of half chances for both sides, a decent stop from Rudy Gestede’s header by their keeper and a superb block by Matt Killgallon, I don’t think either side really threatened.
We took control in the second half and Jordan Rhodes again took his chance and, for once, we were able to hold our lead and add to it later on.
It was our first clean sheet since February and a solid win against a side that is, somehow, still above us in the league table.
It has to be said, the Championship this season is very poor. Reading won at Charlton for only their third win in nine and are still in sixth.
Annoyingly their win meant the gap between us and them was not reduced. It will take a minor miracle for us to charge into the play-offs now but until it is mathematically impossible my forlorn hope will remain intact.
And if we don’t get there this time, I genuinely believe we can make the top six next season.
Meanwhile, it appears Rovers have a new signing.
I hadn’t heard anything about it, but a chap nobody had seen before was brought on near the end of Saturday’s game.
I jest, of course, for it was the re-emergence of Dickson Etuhu that had many rubbing their eyes in disbelief.
There was a smattering of boos which was wholly unnecessary, but it is true the Nigerian has done nothing to win the hearts and minds of the Rovers faithful.
His signing was one that, like Danny Murphy, seemed positive at the time as he always did well for Fulham, and sadly so far it has not worked out.
We might as well give him a chance now to prove his worth. He certainly owes the club a few decent games.
