POTTING king Jonny Clark, who was the large table champion and overall runner-up in last season's Golden Cue competition, will meet best pal Dave Howe in the opening round of the 2014 series.

“It is an amazing tie to start the Golden Cue season, they are team mates in the same league and both of them are super players,” said Golden Cue secretary Neil McGovern.

The original Golden Cue competition finished in 1993 but was revived six years ago and the tournament has continued to grow in stature and popularity with the best local players on the circuit.

“We’ve had a record entry for 2014, and that's a fabulous response,” added McGovern.

“There are 64 players in the first round with one player coming over the border from Yorkshire.

“It is terrific to see the Golden Cue thriving and attracting so much interest. We have a competition to be proud of.”

Brian Collinge, the 2013 small table champion and overall champion, will meet Steve Winckley from Clitheroe Royal British Legion.

“Ben Hyatt, who recently broke the record for the highest break in the Burnley Snooker League with a fantastic 127, is in the competition too, so there are plenty of big games to look forward to.”

Prize Money for the overall champion has risen to £1,200 this season.

The first large table and small table first round ties will be played on Friday, April 11.
