IN-form Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson will come out of international retirement if England come calling.
The 34-year-old has kept four clean sheets in six unbeaten Championship matches since recovering from the blood clot on his lung that could have killed him.
That has led to speculation that Robinson, who retired from international football in 2010, is on England manager Roy Hodgson’s radar ahead of this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
Rovers boss Gary Bowyer has already voiced his support for his number one to earn a remarkable Three Lions recall.
And now the revitalised Robinson, who won the last of his 41 caps in October 2007, has confirmed he would jump at the chance to be part of an England squad again.
“If the manager ever feels he needs me or wants me, I wouldn’t say no,” Robinson said.
“I would quite happily sit on the bench and pass on my experience to others.
“I feel better now than before when I stopped playing. I love it now. I play like a young kid without a care in the world.
“That’s my general view on life as well, not just football. I’m more relaxed, I’m a different person.
“There were doubts whether I’d come back or if I’d have the desire.
“But I never thought about retiring. It just pushed me on even harder to show people what I can do.
“If I could help in any shape, manner of form then I’d be happy to do so.”
Hodgson seems certain to take Joe Hart and Ben Foster to Brazil as his respective first and second choice goalkeepers.
But the third keeper’s spot looks up for grabs and Hodgson could be tempted to name an experienced stopper as back-up.
“When I first started, Kevin Keegan took me along to training sessions when I was in the U21s and, for the first two days, he’d bring in a couple of youngsters to train with the full squad,” said Robinson, who kept four clean sheets in five matches at the 2006 World Cup.
“For me to train with David Seaman was phenomenal.
“When I was playing, I had David James there and he was a great help to me.
“You do learn things from other keepers, especially older, more experienced ones.”
On Thursday Hodgson will announce his England squad for the friendly against Denmark at Wembley on March 5.
