AFTER our 3-3 draw at Sheffield Spartans on Saturday, Solway’s win on Sunday means that they have won the league now. But nothing has changed for us.
We did say at the start of the season that we wanted to win the league but Solway are a very good side and they deserve it this season.
We said that we wouldn’t give up on first place until it was mathematically impossible, but they had quite a commanding lead and it would have taken quite a bit for them not to win it.
That’s over now and we want to finish in second position. We’ve made progress every year here and finishing second would continue that progress.
We finished third and won the play-offs last year, so this time we want to finish second, win the play-offs and win the cup.
We have four league games left and we haven’t confirmed our place in the play-offs yet, so we want to do that.
The Sheffield game was a tough one because the week before they had gone to Scotland and got a point at Solway, before beating Manchester Minotaurs on the Sunday.
They were on a high, then, and we knew the game was going to be difficult. We were short of a couple of bodies but we’re not making excuses.
Spartans went 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 up but we equalised each time.
We probably had the better of possession and chances, we just couldn’t convert our opportunities.
We didn’t play badly, and there’s certainly no shame in going there and getting a draw.
Reece Cairney-Witter picked up a suspension at the weekend so we’ll be without him when we play at home to Telford Titans on Saturday night.
Telford have struggled this season but they got their first point of the season recently against Whitley Warriors, who we travel to face on Sunday.
We won’t be taking either side lightly.
