OUT-OF-FAVOUR forward Leon Best says he will be out to prove a point in his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday after four ‘hard’ months on the sidelines at Blackburn Rovers.
The 27-year-old, who yesterday signed a one-month deal with Championship rivals Wednesday, has not played for Rovers since their 1-0 home defeat to Charlton on October 19.
“I want to be playing as I love football,” said Best, who spent two spells on loan with the Owls earlier in his career.
“I’ve had a hard time not playing at Blackburn so I thank the manager and everyone here (Hillsborough) for giving me the opportunity to come back and play.
“There’s always a point to prove whether it’s with someone else or yourself. I am a person who always wants to do to do better and prove myself I can do better and I’m glad to be put into a position to do that.”
Best’s loan deal at Hillsborough runs until March 12 and covers seven matches – six in the league and today’s FA Cup fifth round clash with Charlton.
Should Best – who was also attracting from the Addicks – impress Wednesday will be given the chance to extend the loan.
Owls boss Stuart Gray expects the Republic of Ireland international to make an instant impact.
Gray said: “The most important thing now is that he hits the ground running. We’ve brought him in and hopefully he can do that for us.”
Best – one of Rovers’ biggest earners – has scored two goals in 16 appearances for Rovers following his move from Newcastle United in July 2012.
He was dropped for September’s trips to Burnley and Leicester for comments he made on social networking site Instagram before apologising and returning to the squad for the 3-1 win at Bournemouth – where he scored.
But he lost his place in Gary Bowyer’s team and he was the subject of a fresh club investigation following further comments he made on Instagram.
Meanwhile, Bowyer is still hoping to add to his squad by signing a central defender as cover for Grant Hanley and Matt Kilgallon.
