JACK Steff helped create a little bit of history – now he is hoping to make a bit more.

The talented amateur middleweight became one of the first boxers not to wear protective head gear as part the new IABA rules.

And the 22-year-old can expect to have plenty more bouts without a head guard especially if he turns professional as is the likely outcome in the near future.

Steff, a double junior national ABA champion, showed he was back to his best after beating England number one Jake Haigh in convincing fashion.

The Rawtenstall boxer, who fights of Roche Boxing Club in Burnley, took time out of the ring after a stunning career in his younger years.

But after beating Haigh at Wilmslow Leisure Centre on points in convincing fashion coach Brian Roche believes it is only a matter of time before he turns professional.

“Jack was one of th e best junior fighters in the country as a youngster and he proved that by winning two national titles.

“He took time out but is now back with a bang and all the top promoters are looking at him.

“He is an exceptional fighter and it is only a matter of time before he does turn professional.

“He has is all, a powerful punch, great ring sense and is a very intelligent boxer.”

Steff dominated the three round contest so much so that he was given the unanimous decision from the judges.

“Jake is the number one in England and Jack beat him very easily. It just goes to show just how good he is.”

Next up for Steff will be a light heavyweight contest against the RAF national champion Roche believes another victory for his star fighter will see him move a step closer to becoming a professional boxer.
