BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer is relishing watching a ‘great battle’ between Todd Kane and Adam Henley for the right-back spot.
Kane had been an ever present this season until he missed Saturday’s 0-0 draw at QPR through suspension.
The on-loan Chelsea man, 20, returns for tomorrow’s visit of Millwall to Ewood Park.
But there is no guarantee he will win his place back in the side given Henley’s display against Harry Redknapp’s title chasers.
The 19-year-old was outstanding as Rovers kept their first clean sheet away from home in 29 matches.
And Henley’s performance in marking former team-mate Junior Hoilett out of the game was all the more impressive given it was his first appearance in nine months.
Bowyer is delighted that Henley, who made his Rovers debut at 17, seems to be over the hamstring problems that have dogged him for most of the year.
Bowyer has known Henley since he was 12 and he always believed he would break into the first team.
“He’s progressed nicely throughout his time at the club, although he’s found himself slipping further back as he was a centre-forward to start with,” said Bowyer of a player he first came across when the current Ewood chief was in charge of the academy.
“He made his full debut at Anfield against Liverpool when we were in the Premier League. “He took to it like a duck to water.
“Unfortunately he picked up the injury last season and it took him time to recover.
“But the level of performance he put in against QPR was where he was before the injury.
“Adam’s had rotten luck but he worked tirelessly with the physios over the summer when everyone else was having a break.
“He’s had to be patient. But at the same he has been dying to get back into the first team. It’s going to be a great battle there.”
