Ukraine defender Andriy Nesmachniy will spend the next few days training with Blackburn Rovers and if he makes a suitable impression then he could also come on board in January.

"He's here for a couple of days but the word trial' is the wrong term because that's disrespectful to the player," said manager Mark Hughes.

"He's an experienced international player, he's got 50-odd caps, and he's a good player who's playing with a good club.

"I always feel more comfortable if I can get an opportunity to see a player actually on the training ground because it gives you a better insight.

"It's okay looking at DVDs and watching from the back of the stand when you're looking at games, but you get a better insight when you see them as personalities, and how they integrate with the group.

"So I always try and take that opportunity if I can."

Hughes first became aware of the Dynamo Kiev left-back, who would cost around £1.2 million, when he saw him in action for the Ukraine against Wales in 2001 and he's been following his progress ever since.

"I've known about him for a number of years. He played against Wales at international level three or four years ago so I was aware of him then.

"He's playing in an international side of good quality and I've seen him on numerous occasions in the Champions League as well over the years.

"He's also versatile - he can play as a wing back or a left back - and if good players become available then we're interested."
