BLACKBURN ROVERS manager Mark Hughes has hinted he may rebuff approaches for Andy Todd next month after the defender played his way back into favour.

After losing his place in the side to Andre Ooijer earlier in the season, Todd's days at Ewood appeared to be numbered, with rumours of a fall-out with the manager prompting talk of a move in the transfer window.

However, Hughes now appears to have had a rethink in regard to the 32-year-old's future after being impressed by the way that he has stepped into the breach to help solve a defensive injury crisis.

"Given the situation we are in, there are a number of players who have had to step up to the plate and give big performances," said the Rovers boss.

"You think of Andy Todd, who hasn't had a great deal of football this year, and he's had a hell of a week.

"He's come back into the fold and I thought against Reading on Saturday he was solid as a rock.

"I'm pleased for him, and I'm pleased for everybody in the team as it was a difficult situation at 1-0 down at half time.

"I know the individuals I have and I am proud to work with them."

Todd's fall from grace had been alarming to say the least.

After starting the season as Rovers' club captain, he was then axed from the side altogether just three games into the campaign, which led to a three and a half month exile.

But he was brought back in from the cold again when he came on as a second half substitute in the 3-1 home defeat to Newcastle, and after impressing Hughes with his attitude, he has since started the last two games against Nancy and Reading - both of which Rovers won.

Now Hughes has intimated Todd could have a future at Blackburn under him after all.

"I think clubs have made enquiries about Andy, both about his availability and his availability to go out on loan, but there's nothing doing on that score," said the Rovers boss.

Todd's agent, Peter Harrison, added: "Andy has never stated he wants to leave the club.

"For whatever reason, Andy found himself out of the team earlier this season, but he continued to train hard and didn't cause any problems.

"At the end of the day, he just wants to play football at Premiership level on a regular basis because he believes, and I believe, he's still a very good Premiership defender.

"He's at that age and stage in his career now where he doesn't want to be sat in the stand on a Saturday afternoon.

"He's twice been Blackburn's player of the year and he's very happy at the club, but whether he stays or not is down to the club and the manager.

"If Mark thinks he's not needed then I am sure there are plenty of other clubs who would be interested in taking Andy."
