JAY Rodriguez’s England call-up is something the club and the whole town can be proud of, says Burnley manager Sean Dyche.

The former Claret received recognition for a consistent level of performance for Southampton in the Premier League, and goals, with a place in Roy Hodgson’s squad for this month’s friendlies with Chile and Germany at Wembley.

Rodriguez was born and bred in Burnley, and came through the club’s youth system, going on to make his full senior debut in April 2009, earning an England Under 21 cap in February 2011, before making a £7million move to Southampton following their promotion to the Premier League in the summer of 2012.

The former Barden High School pupil and Barrowford Celtic starlet has become a poster boy for the Clarets’ Academy, where his former youth team coach Terry Pashley remains a prominent figure.

And Dyche hopes players can continue to follow in the striker’s footsteps and come through the system at Turf Moor.

“We believe in it, it’s a good life source of players, and there are some good things going on here at youth level.

“There’s no guarantee to that, you still need the raw ingredients going into the system to come out the other end in the right fashion.

“We are looking to get good young players, local players of course would be great, into our system and encourage their development, push them through the system, eventually to the first team.”

Of Rodriguez, he added: “Even though he’s not a Burnley player any more I'm sure he's fondly thought of by all.

“I’m sure everyone’s pleased that he’s got he’s got himself in the England squad.”
