KIERAN Trippier says Jay Rodriguez can go all the way to Brazil, after revelling in his former Turf Moor team-mate’s England call-up.

Burnley-born Rodriguez described the call as ‘a dream come true’ and he will be the first player from the town to achieve international honours for the Three Lions since Brian Miller in 1961 if he takes to the field in either of England’s forthcoming friendlies, against Chile and Germany.

The Clarets youth team product and England Under 21 cap was yesterday named in Roy Hodgson's selection for this month's Wembley double header.

Trippier insists senior international recognition for the striker has come as no surprise.

And he feels inclusion in the 2014 World Cup is a realistic target for Rodriguez.

“It's always been a dream of mine to play for England, so to get to know that Jay has made it into the squad is fantastic and it's a good opportunity for him,” said defender, himself a former England U21 player.

“It's great to see a lad from Burnley, homegrown, get picked for England and it's great to see it happen to an old team-mate.

“He's only 24 and has been doing very well for Southampton. He's a young English lad and he has a lot of goals in his locker.

“He got his Premier League move and made the transition smoothly. His next target was getting into the England set-up and hopefully he will get minutes on the pitch. Now he can set himself a new target for the World Cup.”

And Trippier is confident Rodriguez can be an asset to England.

“He can play in various positions, and he scores different types of goals,” said the right back.

“His goal against Peterborough at home which he took from the halfway line was superb, and in the air he's one of the best I've seen.

“The Southampton manager has been playing him on the left wing, and it seems to be working for him, as the call-up suggests, but I think he's a bigger threat when he's playing off the front in the hole.”

Trippier continued: “His call-up is no surprise.

“I was with him at Barnsley when we were on loan but we were both on the bench so I didn't see much of him. When I first came to Burnley you could tell he had something special.

“Once he started scoring goals, that was it.

“Every time he got the ball you thought something was going to happen.”

Trippier said the club must take credit for developing Rodriguez, particularly the youth department.

“He came through the youth set-up and it's a big achievement. It shows the standard of players the club can bring through, and they helped progress him into the player he is now.

“Terry Pashley did very well with him and must take credit.

“He's a good role model for the young lads at the club now.

“He will be an idol to them.”
