STEVE Cotterill saluted striker Kyle Lafferty's double salvo - but insists the teenager has played better for Burnley.

The 19-year-old grabbed an impressive brace for Burnley in Saturday's 2-2 Championship draw against Roy Keane's Sunderland at Turf Moor.

His goals looked to have been enough to complete back-to-back home wins, until the Black Cats staged a late comeback to earn a point.

Lafferty hit the scoresheet first on nine minutes, running on to Wade Elliott's pass to slide a low right-foot shot past goalkeeper Darren Ward.

He doubled his tally seven minutes after the interval, taking advantage of Dwight Yorke's poor header to beat Ward with another side-foot effort.

And while the teenager made an impact in the opposition's box, he also made two important clearances off Burnley's goal-line.

"Kyle has played better and not scored," said Burnley manager Cotterill.

"That's how I would describe his performance.

"But the two goals I'm sure will do him the power of good. I don't want to take that away from him.

"I'm sure he will get plenty of good things written about him because he scored the two goals.

"Kyle has got a bright future here - we know that."
