GOALSCORER Leighton McGivern's season could be over after he suffered a broken fibula and damaged ankle ligaments in Accrington Stanley's 3-3 draw at Macclesfield on Saturday.
The former Rochdale striker, who only joined the Reds last month following a spell at Vauxhall Motors, was carried off just minutes after opening his scoring account.
McGivern went straight to hospital after leaving the pitch on a stretcher in the 35th minute, and X-rays revealed the extent of the damage, which will rule him out for around four months.
The incident was even more controversial for Stanley because they did not receive a free kick following Carl Regan's tackle from behind on the front man.
"The referee said he might have made a mistake but we've got a lad in hospital and we haven't even got a free kick," said Stanley manager John Coleman.
"It was a horrendous challenge.
"He (Leighton) heard a crack and was in a lot of pain.
"It's not looking good for him at the moment."
