Jay Spearing admitted to being ‘very surprised’ after beating Blackburn Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes to the Championship Player of the Year prize at Monday’s Northwest Football Awards.

The Bolton Wanderers midfielder – who turned down a move to Rovers in the summer – was also up against Blackpool winger Tom Ince.

Former Rovers target Spearing said: “I’m very proud to get it but also very surprised as well.”

Rhodes scored 28 goals in his debut campaign at Ewood Park and already has 10 for this season – the most in the Championship.
