Hutton 14 Burnley 66

BURNLEY broke their losing run in emphatic fashion with a 10-try maximum bonus point win at Hutton.

After losing their opening five games of the season, the Holden Road side finally got their North Lancs One campaign up and running.

The victory takes them off the bottom of the table and up to ninth place.

While player/coach Simon Finnan, who was one of six try scorers, welcomed the victory, he said it was not a time to get carried away.

“It was a great win for us but you can’t read too much in to it as Hutton were not the greatest of teams on the day,” said the coach.

It was a fourth defeat in five outings for the Preston side whose points difference is minus 125.

But it was an important victory for Burnley who responded well to last weekend’s 9-7 home defeat to a Mossley Hill side who had also started the season poorly.

The talented Matt Crowley made a welcome return to the Burnley line-up and soon made his presence felt with the opening try – the first of three he scored on the day.

Young full back Will Holden also cross early on – both converted by Crowley – but Hutton also scored twice as there appeared to be little between the two sides.

But as soon as Burnley’s forwards began to dominant the set pieces, the backs got some good ball to work with resulting in Crowley going over for a second.

Nino Angelone then burst through under the sticks after a trademark scrum half move opened up a channel for the prop.

A fifth try arrived soon after when Adam Healy drew the last man to pass inside to Finnan for an easy run-in before Alister Quinn scored the sixth of the opening period.

Hutton continued to press in the second half but some good defensive work at close quarters by Burnley captain Luca Angelone and Cristian Allanson with support from other forwards kept them out.

Burnley managing four more tries in the half – the best off the bunch coming from Holden who finished off a fine team move.

Crowley completed his hat-trick and Quinn got is second of the game.

James MacDonald completed the scorer with a debut first team try in his 20th first team outing.
