RIMINGTON relinquished their grip on the West Riding Cup they won in such memorable circumstances at Elland Road last season after slipping to a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Newsome.

The cup holders had six players missing who started last season’s final and it proved crucial against a side they would have hoped to have beaten comfortably.

But it wasn’t just missing personal, it was missed chances that was also Rimington’s downfall.

Manager Terry Braithwaite (below) said his side will now have to show ‘grit and character’ as the East Lancashire League Division One champions concentrate on league duties.

“We had six players from last years’ final starting 11 missing , and it proved a big loss,” said Braithwaite.

“Take nothing from Newsome, they got the bit between their teeth whereas we seemed unable to get going. “We will just have to lick our wounds and continue to compete for other trophies, the next few weeks will be pivotal in how the rest of this season goes – now it’s time to show our grit and character.”

In what was a lively start from both sides, Rimington took the lead on the half hour mark when Walsh and Hickling combined and Conti slid the ball home at the far post.

But three second half Newsome goals ended Rimington’s grip on the cup.

Braithwaite’s side are back in league action when they travel to Enfield on Saturday.
