AN injury-time own goal ensured Rovers snatched a point from a breathless Lancashire derby featuring two penalties and two red cards.
Blackpool opened the scoring in the 13th minute through Tom Ince’s spot-kick.
But Rovers were level eight minutes later with a penalty of their own, converted by the Championship’s leading marksman Jordan Rhodes.
It came against the run of play when the hosts went back in front six minutes before the break courtesy of a speculative strike from Dan Gosling.
Rovers substitute DJ Campbell – on his first return to his former club – was sent-off along with Seasiders left-back Jack Robinson five minutes from the end of normal time.
But more drama was to follow as in the second of five minutes of injury-time, an inswinging Tom Cairney free kick was turned into his own net by Blackpool sub Steve Davies.
In a frenetic start to the match Jake Kean was forced into making a double save from Ince and Stephen Dobbie, who also fizzed over a cross that Neal Bishop just failed to convert.
But Kean was beaten by Ince from 12 yards after Matt Kilgallon was adjudged to have man-handled Ricardo Fuller in the box.
The visitors responded strongly and after Josh King fired over from the edge of the area, they levelled through Rhodes.
The spot-kick specialist sent Matthew Gilks the wrong way to register his 10th goal of the season after his goalbound shot had been handled by Robinson.
The momentum had suddenly shifted and Tommy Spurr headed over before Alan Judge took a pass from Cairney and brought a fine save out of Gilks.
A thrilling first half still had time for one more goal and, surprisingly, it went the way of the Seasiders.
On-loan Newcastle United midfielder Gosling was afforded the time and space to send a 25-yard drive past the seemingly unsighted Kean and into the bottom corner.
The second half took longer to spark into life.
Aside from a well-struck attempt from Dobbie that took a nick and went inches wide, it was not until the final 15 minutes that the first true opening of the period arrived as Campbell – a 60th-minute replacement for Judge – flashed over a cross that just evaded Cairney.
Rovers were pushing hard for an equaliser but their hopes of getting one were hit after Campbell and Robinson were sent off after an almighty scramble in the box turned into a 20-man melee featuring every outfield player – and unused substitute Leon Best.
But the game still had one more final twist as Davies headed into his own goal.
