DJ Campbell says there would be no sweeter place to score his first Blackburn Rovers goal than his former club Blackpool today.

But the fit-again striker, who is making his first return to Bloomfield Road, would happily wait another game to get off the mark if it meant Rovers recording a win that would put their season back on track.

Gary Bowyer’s side go into the Lancashire derby seven points behind the play-off places.

Campbell has spent most of the campaign on the sidelines after damaging ankle-ligaments in pre-season.

But the 31-year-old has seen enough of Rovers to suggest that once they find some consistency, they can challenge for a top-six spot.

And that is why Campbell, who marked his return from injury with a late cameo in last weekend’s loss to Charlton Athletic, believes Rovers can become the first side to win at his old hunting this season.

“It would be great to get my first goal there,” said Campbell, scorer of 33 goals in 69 Championship and Premier League appearances across three spells for Blackpool.

“I haven’t been back there yet so this will be my first time.

“Blackpool is a ground and a place I have good memories of and we shared some good times there but Blackburn is my future now.

“Obviously to score would be great but if I don’t and we win, that will be as good for me.

“We need to start winning more consistently now and push on.

“It’s coming up to Christmas and it’s usually around that time that you can start telling who’s going to be up there challenging and who’s not.

“So we’ve got another couple of months to get our consistency together.

“We’ve got some great players here and the gaffer has brought in some young quality which will only get better.

“With all of us back fit I’m sure we can push on and get up the league.

“I’m sure we’re capable of getting all three points against Blackpool.”

With Corry Evans ruled out until the New Year and David Dunn and Ruben Rochina still on the road to recovery, Campbell’s return is a welcome one for Rovers boss Bowyer.

Campbell arrived on a three-month loan at Ewood Park from QPR in February.

The well-travelled front man played seven games without scoring before the loan was cut short after he broke his foot.

But following his release from QPR at the end of the campaign, he signed a two-year permanent deal with Rovers in July.

After regaining his full fitness Campbell looked sharp and was on target in pre-season before he suffered his fresh injury blow.

He said: “I’ve not been able to show the fans what I can do.

“Hopefully the injuries are behind me and I can push on and help us back into the Premiership, which we all want.”
