BRADLEY Smith will get the chance to show off his talents on the biggest stage when he competes in the qualifying rounds of the AJ Bell World Squash Championship in Manchester this weekend.

The Chorley teenager, regarded as one of the brightest prospects in the sport, admitted it was a privilege to be in the same competition as the world’s best players.

The 17-year-old is hoping to be one of 16 players who come through two qualifying rounds and progress to the main draw.

While getting to the first round on Monday is a big ask – Smith is the youngest player in the qualifiers – competing in such a prestigious event is all part of the learning experience.

Smith, who is a member of David Lloyd Chorley Squash Club, was ranked number two in the country at under 17s level before stepping up to the under 19s age group this year. He has represented England in both age groups while he finished eighth in the British Junior Open – the biggest junior squash tournament in the world. However, this will be his biggest test to date.

“It is a real privilege to play in the event,” said Smith, who also plays for East Lancashire Squash Club. “Tthis is a great opportunity for me.”

Coach Danny Massaro, husband of world number two Laura, said: “Bradley has what it takes to become a professional player.”
