DARWEN and Chorley made it a super Saturday as the locals lorded it over seaside rivals to keep up their recent good runs.

The duo are both on a roll at the moment and Darwen were particularly impressive as they seriously dented St Annes hopes of a Chorley Building Society Northern League top five spot thanks to a fine show at Vernon Road.

Darwen were put into bat after St Annes won the toss and they lost skipper Jordan Clarke after he had hit one sweet boundary, while Ammer Mirza went for 18 but John Cordingley's 45 from 83 balls was a good and crucial knock as he let others bat around him.

Chris Lowe was one of those to do just that as he hit 48 before his innings was ended when he became one of three victims for Toby Bulcock, while Neil Cordingley's 31 also aided the Towers cause as they closed their innings on 196-8.

St Annes were in the mood to try and chase down the testing target and while they lost Nanthesh Kiruparan, Natan Bolus, and Matthew Taafe cleaply, skipper Andy Kellett and Sajid Nalbandh appeared to be turning the clash in their favour as they made 45 and 47 respectively.

John Cordingley then claimed the prized scalp of Bulcock as he held a return catch to remove the former Rawtenstall and Accrington man first ball, although there were still nevy moments as Callum Jones (35) and Alex Naylor (27) staged a lare assault on the Darwen target.

But Chris Wade (3-23) and professional Alan Kruger (4-77) mopped that pair and the rest of the tail up as the Towers claimed a 13-run win.

A few miles up the Fylde coast, Chorley were also celebrating as they beat Blackpool at Stanley Park.

It was a good effort by Andy Holdsworth's men as they chased down a testing target at a ground where runs are often difficult to come by.

Home professional Richard Gleeson, who is playing as a batsman only at the moment, looked like the real deal as he opened for Blackpool and the Cumberland quick bowler made his career highest score of 101 from 142 balls.

He was the last man out with the final ball of the 50th over and certainly boosted his side.

Paul Danson (18) and Alex Smith (27) made other useful contributions as Blackpool were 171-8 with Iain Critchley the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 4-27.

Blackpool's bowling attack is weakened without Gleeson and Chorley started well with Andy Griffiths and David Fisher putting on 36 for the first wicket before the former was bowled by Danny Gilbert for 21.

Then Fisher was trapped in front by Steven Mercer to leave Chorley on 50-2 and that bcame 56-3 when Will Moulton went in the same way to the same bowler.

But Ian Dickinson and Gaurav Dhar set about repairing the damage of that wobble and they put on 70 for the fourth wicket before Dickinson fell for an excellent 42.

Holdsworth joined Dhar and made 13 and when he was out, Chorley needed just 15 to win.

Dhar ensured they got those few runs as he ended on 60 not out and led his men home with eight balls to spare.

Elsewhere, Rishton professional Dan Salpietro hit a hundred and claimed four wickets as he acted as Barrow sub-pro. But he couldn’t lead the title favourites further towards the crown as Netherfield dug in for a draw.

Leyland are second and they were held up by Kendal as they tried to take full advantage of Barrow’s draw.

But they too were foiled by men from the Lake District as Kendal sub-pro, Ramsbottom’s Pieter Malan, made a half-century.

Fleetwood and Morecambe drew, while Danny Welboune made a magnificent 130 as Lancaster crushed Preston.
