BLACKBURN ROVERS manager Mark Hughes admitted 'we got what we deserved' after Talal El Karkouri's late winner sank Rovers at The Valley last night.

Rovers appeared to have ground out a point against a Charlton side haunted by the spectre of relegation, but El Karkouri then curled in an injury-time free kick to give the Addicks their first win under new boss Les Reed.

A bitterly disappointed Hughes said: "It's hard to take when you concede a goal at that stage in the game, but if we're honest, we probably didn't deserve anything anyway.

"To lose a goal like that at that stage, when you're expecting to take something out of it, is very disappointing.

"We should be able to see the game out."

Rovers had huffed and puffed for long periods against a side that had only won two games all season in the Premier League before last night.

But El Karkouri then compounded a disappointing night when he delivered the ultimate sucker punch to leave Rovers dangerously close to the drop zone.

"We know we can do a lot better than that," said Hughes.

"I wasn't happy in the first half. I felt we had good opportunities to create better opportunities for ourselves, but we didn't take them.

"We were a little bit sloppy with our passing and we weren't good enough, really.

"As for the goal, I haven't seen it again but it's a bit hard to take when the ball ends up in the middle of your goals."

Hughes stopped short of condemning Brad Friedel and Lucas Neill for their role in El Karkouri's winner.

"I thought on the night they played extremely well, along with Andre.

"Possibly the only positives in the game were their performances so I'm not going to highlight them."

Rovers have now lost five of their last seven games in the Premiership and Hughes conceded his players need to start winning quickly if they are to avoid getting sucked into a dogfight at the bottom.

"We're a side that needs to start winning more games. That's obvious.

"Tonight's performance wasn't good enough but we know we are better than that and we've proved that in games this season.

"But we need more points on the board and we're honest enough to admit that."
