CLITHEROE will feel unlucky to have been knocked out of the Lancashire FA United Co-Operative Challenge Trophy as they gave UniBond Premier League side Marine a run for their money but ultimately lost out.

The Blues' makeshift back four, marshalled by Simon Garner and Greg Anderson, kept the dangerous Marine strikeforce at bay in an even first half with James Dean going close at the other end.

Clitheroe had several good chances at the start of the second but fell behind when James Connolly headed home a corner in the 70th minute.

Clitheroe poured forward to try and get an equaliser with Dave Dempsey and Craig Sargeson going close but they were hit by a late sucker punch.

Jamie Nay stood on the ball and that left Paul Byrne with the task of stroking the ball home.

But the Blues will be buoyed by this showing and are set to name their new manager before the game against Bamber Bridge on Saturday.
