FENISCOWLES lifted the third Inter-School Bowling Competition at Blackburn’s Corporation Park.
Four teams – champions Feniscowles, Edgworth, Longshaw and Holy Souls – competed for the title in front of an enthusiastic crowd of parents, teachers and friends who thoroughly enjoyed the sunshine and the action on the greens.
Joyce Tatterall, Chairperson for Blackburn with Darwen Bowls Partnership, said: “The idea of the competition is to spark an interest in bowls at an early age.
“Bowls has had this old image for too long, something your grandparents did, but it is a lot of fun and children love it when they get involved.
“I was amazed by the talent on show, and although they’d only had six weeks coaching before the competition began, they put on a fantastic show.
“All the children were brilliant ambassadors for their schools, and were very well mannered towards the referees and markers.”
All the children competing were from their final year at Primary School, however organisers are planning a tournament for Year 7 and 8 pupils later in the year.
“The idea is to nurture the children’s talent so that they keep playing when they are at secondary school and then join one of our local bowling clubs.”
Feniscowles winning squad were Charlie Morgan, Freer Rigby, Jamie West, Lewis Lawrenson, Zain Jaffer, Curts Mitchell, Jamie Greig and Sam Hodgkinson.
Youngsters can take advantage of special two hour coaching sessions for just 50p plus a soft drink at Brantsfell Road bowling green on July 20 and 27 plus August 3, 10, 24, 31 and September 7.
