ST CUTHBERT’S Primary School have shown off their all-round sporting abilities – with rounders being one of them!
The Darwen school have been crowned town rounders, netball and cricket champions in a memorable trophy cabinet-bulging year.
The school also won the Blackburn and Darwen Kwik Stick Hockey festival while they were runners-up in the Darwen schools rugby and tennis tournaments .
The only sport they didn’t shine in was football and they won the fair play award for that!
“It certainly has been a year to remember and the trophy cabinet is full which is always a nice thing to see,” said teacher Gary Lloyd.
“But the teams have certainly had to work for their success and the dedication they have show to train and work hard during and after school has been their reward.”
Incredibly, the super Saints won the rounders, cricket and netball – for which they completed the league and cup double – without losing a single game.
Having already clinched the Darwen Primary Schools netball league with a 100 per cent record, St Cuthbert’s went about adding the cup as well.
Held at DACA, St Cuthbert’s beat Holy Trinity in the final to clinch the double.
In rounders, the Saints ended Avondale’s firm grip on the sport having been crowned champions for the last dozen years.
The format saw teams compete in two mini leagues with the winner of each meeting to determine the overall champions.
And St Cuthberts, who had home advantage for the final, won by the slendest of margins. And they made it a hat-trick of town titles after winning the cricket – again beating Avondale in the final.
The success was not just restricted to Darwen as St Cuthbert’s went on to beat schools from across the borough to win the Kwik Stick Hockey tournament held at Pleckgate High School.
“Winning trophies is great but just as important is the sportsmanship the pupils have shown,” added Lloyd. “So in many ways, winning the sportsmanships award was just as special.”
