Darren Lehmann insists Australia will resist the temptation to bring back Mike Hussey or Lancashire’s Simon Katich despite their disastrous batting performances in the first two Ashes Tests.
There have been calls for Australia to recall the veteran pair after the team collapsed to 128 all out in the first innings of the second Test at Lord’s, giving England an easy chance to go 2-0 up in the series.
Yet despite the clear fragility of the top six, and the excellent form of Katich, who is starring at Emirates Old Trafford, coach Lehmann says he and the selectors have no plans to look beyond the touring party.
Asked whether they would consider doing so, Lehmann responded with a curt “No.”
“I hope the problems can be fixed from within the squad. We have to bat better, we know that. To last only 53 overs in the first innings is not acceptable for this group.
“I felt sorry for the bowlers at Lord’s. They need more time off than they had in the first innings and they need a bit of a reset before they have to go out and bat again. Everyone in the squad has a chance to play.”
Lehman’s words are a boost to Lancashire, who Katich has helped to the top of the County Championship Division Two and to the brink of qualification into the latter stages of the Twenty20.
They look to take another giant step towards that goal tomorrow night when they face Yorkshire at a packed Emirates Old Trafford, aiming to go one better than the tie earlier in the season.
Tomorrow’s game starts at 6.30pm but before then Lancashire travel to the Midlands tonight for a game with the Leicestershire Foxes.
