DAVID Jones is on the brink of joining Burnley, but it is believed he cannot officially become a Claret until next month.

The 28-year-old is a free agent following his release from Wigan, but the midfielder is tied into a contractual agreement with his old club until the end of July.

After that, however, Jones, who spent part of last season on loan at Blackburn Rovers, is set to be unveiled at Turf Moor after spending five days on tour with Sean Dyche’s squad as a trialist.

Jones came off the bench for the final 15 min-minutes against Cork City last night to play his part in a 3-0 win, in which Charlie Austin and Kieran Trippier played their first games of pre-season.

Dyche has hailed the trip a success after ending the five-day training camp with on a high.

The Burnley boss put his squad through some intense training sessions in searing temperatures at Fota Island, but he was pleased with the response from his players.

“First things first it (the trip) is to improve fitness and sharpness of course. The main thing is to get the group through pre-season injury free – that’s the plan.

“It’s not that easy because we still want them to play hard in the game to get themselves ready for when it really starts and there are points to play for.”

Ben Mee suffered a knock in the first half and had to be substituted, while Marvin Bartley did not travel with the group because of injury.
