STEVE Cotterill has urged Brian Jensen to try and wrestle back Burnley's goalkeeping jersey from Danny Coyne.

Coyne returned to action in Tuesday night's 2-1 Championship win over Leeds, following 14 months on the sidelines recovering from a cruciate knee ligament injury.

The Welsh international turned in a solid display at Turf Moor and was on the verge of a clean sheet until a late deflected David Healy strike dashed his chance.

Clarets manager Cotterill admits he made the goalkeeper switch after being disappointed with Jensen in recent weeks, coupled with Coyne's hard work in training.

Cotterill insists the onus is now on the Danish stopper to force his way back into the Burnley side.

"Over the last few weeks I've been a bit disappointed with some aspects of Brian's game, to which Danny has come to the fore in the last month of training," admits Cotterill.

"My decision has been based on a period of time, not one mistake.

"Danny has been ready physically, so that gets over the knee injury problem he had. Mentally, he's been desperate to get back in the team.

"Now Brian has got to come to the fore because I will scrutinise him now, more than I will scrutinise Danny, like I do with most players when they are left out of the team.

"I still want to know if they want to be part of the team and part of the squad. If players don't react very kindly to being put out of the squad, I'm afraid that does them no favours in my mind.

"You have to be all together as one. It is up to those out of the squad to congratulate those in it and doing well.

"And when the shoe is on the other foot, I expect those players to do the same."

Cotterill was pleased with Coyne's performance against Leeds and has reassured the former Tranmere man that he is under no added pressure between the posts.

"I was especially pleased for Danny. It's been a long time out for him," said Cotterill.

"I said to him last week he must not think there's any pressure on him - that if he throws one in, I'm not going to leave him out in the next game."

Veteran defender John McGreal also made his return from injury against Leeds, partnering Michael Duff in the centre of defence after seven games on the sidelines with a medial knee ligament problem.

Cotterill is now hoping the 34-year-old stays injury free and play a regular role in the heart of Burnley's defence.

He said: "John has got to be in there and playing all the time.

"There's no point, with all due respect to John, in him playing four or five games on the spin and then miss four or five games.

"That does nobody any favours. We need him fit and playing every week for us to be better back there."
