ALAN Dewhurst is the winner of the Great Harwood and District Bowling League’s President’s Silver Salva after dashing hopes of a home club winner.
Played in glorious sunshine at Hurst Green Bowling Club, the Ribblesdale A player fought off a brave fightback from Bernard Holden from the host club to win 21-14 in the final.
Dewhurst had the better of the opening end lead 5-2 but Holden wasn’t deterred and rallied to take the next six points to take an 8-5 lead. However, Dewhurst was not to be denied and took the initiative, winning 11 of the next 14 points to open up a 16-11 advantage and despite a late rally by Holden, held on to win an entertaining final 21-14.
Dewhurst had been given his sternest test earlier in the competition when he squeezed through his quarter final clash with Steve Hindle of Rushton Street A, winning by a narrow 21-19 scoreline.
However, there was no such problem in his semi final with Mick Opie as he ran out a 21-7 winner against the Globe A bowler.
Holden won all-Hurst Green quarter final with Michael Embery 21-20 then beat Globe Heys’ Colin Crompton 21-15 in the semi final.
