MARTIN Paterson has been promised a central role at Huddersfield Town after confirming his Burnley exit.
Paterson was speaking to six clubs to decide his future after returning from honeymoon, and has joined the Terriers on a two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months.
Paterson was offered a new deal by Burnley but made it clear that a desire to play up front next season would be crucial in his decision.
Clarets boss Sean Dyche often utilised him in a wide role last season and the 26-year-old had concerns that he could again be asked to play in that role if he stayed at Turf Moor.
Fellow Championship clubs Middlesbrough, Birmingham, Charlton and Ipswich were also speaking to Paterson this week, as were League One side Wolves.
But Huddersfield won the race as they seek to bolster their strike force, having narrowly avoided relegation in May.
“I am a firm believer in putting round pegs in round holes and Martin has come to the club to play as a striker,” Robins said.
“He played three quarters of his 41 games for Burnley last season in a wide position, but his career history shows that he has flourished as a central striker and that is the role he feels is his best. I agree and he will fulfil that role for us.”
Paterson’s exit will leave Burnley looking at forward options, with Kevin Davies among those linked.
The former Bolton striker has held talks with League One side Preston, while Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool are also interested.
The Clarets are also looking to strengthen in central midfield following the departure of Chris McCann, and have been linked with a move for Nicky Bailey.
Burnley’s first-team squad regrouped yesterday for fitness tests ahead of the start of pre-season training proper today.
Among those returning were Charlie Austin and Danny Ings, despite interest from elsewhere this summer.
Hull had an offer for Austin rejected last week and their confidence that a deal was close has waned as Burnley have dug their heels in over a fee with the Tigers also weighing up a bid for Celtic striker Gary Hooper.
