Blackburn Rovers winger Morten Gamst Pedersen was pelted with a plastic glass thrown from the crowd in last night's draw at Feyenoord.
But the incident in the 13th minute of the goalless draw failed to take the shine off another excellent night's work in Europe.
Hughes said: "Morten had a pint of something thrown over him.
"I'm not quite sure what it was. Heineken was it? All I know is he stinks of beer."
Pedersen added: "I got beer in my face and had sticky eyes afterwards.
"It could have been worse but it shouldn't happen.
"Of course you think what might have happened if it was something else, like a hard thing, but it was just a plastic glass.
"It's up to UEFA if they follow it up or not. But I'm okay.
"There are no marks on me. Just a bit of beer in my eyes."
