ROSS Wallace is a man on a mission – to fire Burnley up the Championship by finding his shooting boots, and play his way to a new Turf Moor deal.
The winger is one of seven senior players whose contract is up at the end of the season.
Wallace insists he would jump at the chance to stay.
“I love it here,” he said.
And he feels if the Clarets can keep the nucleus of the squad together – particularly through the January transfer window, and tie up deals for others, they can be a team to watch in the promotion push.
“We’ve got a good squad, we just need to build on that,” said the Scot ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Nottingham Forest.
“We’ve got a few players out of contract and I think it’s important we get that sorted early doors.
“I’ve not heard anything yet – I don’t think anyone has – but I’m pretty sure the board will have one eye on it.
“You’re trying to build some-thing then if you’ve got six or seven out of contract – with five or six of those in the team – it wouldn’t be very good if all those players left. But I’m pretty sure the board know what’s happening, they’re not stupid. I’m sure it will get sorted.”
Wallace added: “Like everybody you’d be lying if you said you didn’t have one eye on the situation. But it’s not up to me, it’s up to the manager to decide what he wants to do.
“If he asks me to sign a new contract, well, I love it here.”
Wallace has weighed in with some impressive performances under new boss Sean Dyche, and provided assists for four goals this season.
But after a number of near misses he can’t wait to add to the scoresheet himself.
“I’ve been disappointed that I’ve not scored yet this season. I’ve been gutted. But it’s not for the want of trying,” said the Scot, who last season went on a run of scoring in four straight league games – the first Claret to achieve such a streak in six years.
“I’ve had a lot of good shots recently. I had the one at Hull off the bar and keepers have made a couple of good saves.
“I’ve been practising shooting.
“This time last year I had a few games where I was scoring. Hopefully I’m saving them for towards the end of the season when we're up there maybe.
“I feel like I’m getting closer.
“Hopefully if I get one they’ll just continue.”
Overall, however, Wallace is happy with his current form, and believes he is benefiting from playing in the 4-3-3 formation that Dyche has largely utilised, with Wallace and Martin Paterson either side of central striker Charlie Austin.
“It’s helped me get further up the pitch. The manager’s tried to get me closer to Charlie - me and Pato,” said the former Celtic, Sunderland and Preston wide man.
“With Deano (Dean Marney) bombing on as well and playing further forward I think me and him have been linking up really well in midfield. We’ve been getting up the pitch, and that gets Tripps (Kieran Trippier) up the pitch as well.
“With us all being down that right hand side we’ve been dominating games there and getting balls in for Charlie.”
Wallace added: “We’ve changed slightly with one up front, with Charlie on his own.
“He’s doing a good job of leading the line but to be fair I’m coming inside and Pato’s coming inside on his right foot so we’re never that far away from him.
“People say he’s up on his own but he’s not really – we’re only ever 10-15 yards away from him.”
