Some Lancastrians are off to London tomorrow for a vital prayer meeting outside the Houses of Parliament.

They’ll be joining many from across the UK asking the Lord to help the House of Lord’s see common-sense on Monday and refrain from dismantling our traditional view of marriage between man and woman.

We’ve had quite a few inches on this subject recently and I bring it up this weekend for three reasons. The first one is above.

Secondly, all local churches are invited to play a special video on how they can pray their part in covering the political decision-making process, especially if they can’t make the capital tomorrow.

Thirdly, I was recently taken to task in the letters page for being 'vitriolic' in criticising the liberalisation of marriage.

I’d suggested that if marriage was changed for men to marry men, and women to marry women, perhaps some might extend the ceremony still further. Once we cancel out God's original design of marriage between man and woman (Genesis 1), then what is to stop humans deciding to extend marriage partnerships to who or whatever they like?

The following day I read of an artist tying the knot with a 600-year-old bridge in southern France. Jodi Rose and Le Pont du Diable were pronounced 'bridge and wife' after an intimate ceremony on 17 June.

“Although he is made of stone," explained Jodi, "the resonance of his being is very present, and I feel at peace in his strong embrace. He makes me feel connected to the earth and draws me to rest from my endless nomadic wanderings.”

The nuptials were witnessed by a dozen friends, plus the local mayor who signed the marriage certificate, though French law does not officially recognise the union. Yet?

Many will this weekend pray that our heavenly Lord will assist our earthly lords to see sense.
