THE sheer volume of cash being generated by speed cameras in East Lancashire is bound to shock most motorists.

When it’s a ‘fair cop’ most motorists caught speeding will hold their hands up.

But to hear that our two most prolific gatsos are raising more than a potential £200,000 each year will leave people feeling cheated.

Every one of our major towns in East Lancashire has prolific cameras in place, notably Blackburn, Burnley, Accrington, Nelson and Rawtenstall.

They are responsible for catching thousands of motorists.

The proliferation of these cameras is set to slow in the coming year, with many due to disappear in cost-cutting measures.

The thousands of drivers who have been caught out in Longsight Road, Osbaldeston, and Rossendale Road, Burnley, will feel hard-done-by after speed limits were changed at both sites in recent years.

There needs to be an understanding from the authorities that the speed cameras be used to reduce accidents, and not just to get cash out of motorists.

A review of their use in Lancashire will be eagerly anticipated throughout the county.
