I was at a brass band concert at the Salvation Army Citadel on Friday night and was most impressed.
It was a very pleasant evening with happy people enjoying themselves and a good variety of music.
The Salvation Army has always been in the background of my life and yet I know so little about it.
I must rectify that in the near future.
Every Sunday morning when I was a kid the ‘Sally Band’ used to play on the corner of Fielding Crescent where I lived and my grandmother, who lived with us, used to swank that she had worn the bonnet as a girl and was a life long admirer of the Army.
She always said that their motto ‘it’s no good teaching religion to a hungry man, make sure he’s fed first’ was the ‘only proper Christianity’.
