WHEN the economy is struggling and people are in need, it is the voluntary groups and charities that step in to offer support.
That is why it is such a tragedy that so many of these groups in East Lancashire are on the brink of closing because of cuts.
One group in particular, Blackburn and Darwen Homestart, was on the brink of disaster after its local authority funding was axed.
It had to shed staff and volunteers and cut back the services it offered.
Now, after a lot of hard work from the people at the top of the charity, they have won a lifeline grant from the Big Lottery Fund of over £260,000.
They will now be able to continue for the next three years, but still face an uncertain long-term future.
There are many vital charities in East Lancashire that have not been so fortunate.
The support they provide to vulnerable people is vital and it is important that they are given support and not allowed to become victims of the recession.
