The spell of warm weather in late May inspired me to stroll by water.
I decided to visit the river in the Lake District close to where I was brought up and which was much loved by Wordsworth.
This is the Duddon, right, which is only 15 miles long, rises above the Wrynose pass and reaches the sea around Millom. It is easy to understand just why all rivers are divided into regions. These are: 1: Highland reach where the water moves from a height and builds up strong currents.
2: The middle reach is an area where the ground is more level and there are deep pools which can be full of fish.
3: The estuary which is an area where the fresh water mingles with the sea and is a fascinating area.
The best of the rivers in our area is without doubt the Ribble which begins its 58 mile journey from above Settle to the estuary between Southport and Lytham.
