FIGHTING crime has always been about the community standing up to yobs and showing that bad behaviour will not be tolerated.

The police play a crucial role, of course, but the news that a new street pastor scheme is a resounding success in East Lancashire is a wonderful boost.

Volunteers from local churches have been credited with a fall of 50 per cent in crimes such as vandalism and assaults.

Their methods are simple but effective.

By being on the streets on a Friday and a Saturday night and talking to people in town centres who may be vulnerable to crime these so called ‘street pastors’ have helped to keep people safe and avoid crime.

Some people feel more comfortable talking to a vicar rather than a police officer and their affect in Burnley and Pendle where the scheme has been launched is palpable.

They have also had a positive impact on stopping crimes being committed purely by being a constant presence on the streets.

The police are delighted with the volunteers who have really come up with a community approach to fighting crime.

Officers always need the support of the community in keeping the area safe and these volunteers should be praised for their dedication and success.
