ASHES to Ashes has sparked an ’80s fashion revival – or so I read this week.
Please say it isn’t true.
Fashion designers have been trying to revive the ’80s pretty much since the ’80s, ramming bold colours, shoulder pads and winged eyeliner down our throats every couple of years or so.
But although neon colours, leggings, and brightly coloured tights seem to have slipped through the net and made a return to our wardrobes, thankfully we've managed to stave off a full-on ’80s revival . . . until now, that is.
I’m just hoping these latest predictions never come to fruition.
I don’t think I can handle wearing pastel jackets, blue eyeshadow and side ponytails again. Even if it is cool.
And I certainly won't be able to respect my boyfriend if he starts wearing Miami Vice-style rolled-up jacket sleeves, no socks, and an ultra-thin tie.
What worries me is that we’re nine years into the noughties (incidentally, isn't that word one of those you can stand to write down but couldn't bring yourself to saying out loud?) and so far most of our fashions have been based on revivals from previous decades. This is pretty irresponsible behaviour as far as I'm concerned — what on earth are the fashionable young things of 2030 going to copy unless we come up with something unique to our decade?
Probably ’80s clothing, if the fashion designers have their way.
So hear me out on this one, if not for me, for the sake of your grandchildren.
Before we all jump on the bandwagon and get rooting around our local Barnardo’s charity shop for “vintage” ’80s tat, let’s think about it reasonably for a minute. Do we really want to be back in the days when it would take you an hour to brush out the knots in your hair from over zealous back-combing and hairspraying?
Do we really want to entertain the idea of prancing around town in New Romantic frills and Flashdance legwarmers?
Do we really want to wander around and possibly be photographed wearing clothes that make us look like we did when Charles and Di got married?
I thought not.
Let’s not kid ourselves into thinking the ’80s were cool and interesting.
They were a great source for good TV and music, but let’s leave it at that.
Fashion-wise the ’80s really weren't that good the first time round. I should know. I was there. And I can testify that not that many people can pull off stonewashed denim.
Let's just enjoy Ashes to Ashes for being a good TV show and instead focus our attentions on trying to copy telly stars from today — Kate from The Apprentice's eyeshadow is a good place to start.
