BONFIRE night is a time of fun, with many families across East Lancashire set to enjoy the celebrations tonight.
But there is a much darker side that has seen one family in Blackburn fearing for their safety after fireworks were launched through their letterbox.
And a teenager in Burnley suffered burns after yobs threw fireworks at him.
Meanwhile, fire crews are working overtime putting out rogue blazes – and all because of a minority of people who seem to think Bonfire Night is all about creating as much havoc as possible. In some parts of the region the authorities have had to take steps to close roads to stop the problems.
And in Burnley, the local council is so concerned that all bonfires, no matter how small, must be registered or people risk prosecution for fly-tipping.
Responsible use of fireworks can result in stunning displays.
It's an event which should bring nothing but joy but those who act irresponsibly can bring terror to their victims and, at worst, can ruin lives.
The yobs who engage in such behaviour must realise that there is a high price to pay in their recklessness.
They need to be caught and punished.
