IT is amazing that no one was seriously injured in this weekend’s Original Mountain Marathon.

The fact that everyone returned home safe is testament to the skill and resolve of the competitors, organisers and emergency services.

Conditions faced in the Lake District this weekend were absolutely terrible. At one point it was even considered too unsafe to launch RAF rescue helicopters.

But the organisers were adamant that the 2,500 runners — dozens of whom were from East Lancashire — would be prepared for every eventuality.

This appears to have been the case and the fact the organisers were quick to find areas where the competitors could shelter also ensured there were no major injuries.

Afterwards runners from East Lancashire said that bad conditions were to be expected on this type of marathon, which is deliberately scheduled late in the calendar.

But such terrible weather conditions could not have been predicted ahead of the event.

This was the first time in 41 years that the marathon has had to be cancelled so there is no reason why it shouldn’t continue to be enjoyed in future.
