Jewel of Nasik Sauvignon Blanc 2015, £7, Marks and Spencer
We’ve all heard of India’s two big beer brands, but what about Indian wine? Sula is the country’s biggest producer, founded 16 years ago in Nashik near Mumbai by a locally-raised engineer who quit a career in Silicon Valley to return home with a noted Californian winemaker. This white made specially for M&S has lovely green fruit flavours and is a bargain.
Villa Nardelli Cuvee Carolina 2013, £7.99, Co-op
This price, on offer until January 3, is £2 less than normal for a Tuscan red by a four-time winner of the Italian Winemaker of the Year title. It’s a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is 13% alcohol and quite similar to a good Chianti with lots of red cherry flavours. Well worth sipping with pasta, stew or grilled meats after all that shopping.
