A restaurant boss caused a furore when he replied to negative comments on Trip Advisor.

A hen party who visited the posh Manchester restaurant were unhappy with the service and posted complaints online.

So one of the bosses responded saying the party had turned up over an hour late, increased the numbers without letting them know and left the restaurant covered in confetti. It all turned ugly when he called them chavs and said they wouldn’t know fine dining if it hit them in the face.

A social media storm ensued with half of posters touting the line “the customer is always right” while the other half supported the restaurant.

I was in the latter camp because, having run my own restaurant for seven years, I know how it feels to be at the mercy of culinary ignoramuses.

My family had an authentic Spanish restaurant, but a well-oiled hen party turned up late one night and demanded hummous and taramasalata.

“What kind of Spanish restaurant are youse???” said one mouthy bird when we explained they were not on the menu. Apparently, she’d been to a “tapas bar” called Dimitri’s. The waitress simply smiled and said she was sorry. So Gobby demanded stuffed vine leaves instead.

But the waitress had to flee to stifle a snort of laughter when she placed a piece of tortilla on the table and one of the party shouted, “pass us the quiche will ya???” We clearly failed them miserably because they didn’t leave a tip.

Then there was the case of the rather well-to-do foursome who spent almost £200 on a huge banquet with fine wines. Except they didn’t, because one went out for a cigarette, the two women went to the toilet and the last man went to get his wallet from his friend outside and before we knew it they’d disappeared. Tapas-to-go!

But another chancer was not so lucky. On his way down to visit the gents, this middle class Johnny grabbed two bottles of expensive Rioja, but the restaurant manager took off in hot pursuit and put him under citizens’ arrest before relieving him of his booty.

I could go on about mystery pieces of plastic and long hairs which didn’t match any belonging to the staff, resulting in heavy discounts.

Every restaurant has its stories to tell to prove that the customer is not always right, but few dare to tell it how it is. The truth is that some customers are a complete pain in the alimentary.
