I've cut down on meetings! Anyone recall that John Cleese management training video, Meetings, Bloody Meetings?
But only operating in a voluntary capacity in the world of further education (ie FE) & health & adult social care (that includes the FTN, CCGs etc!), I am trying to cut down on meetings, bloody or not!
In my Healthwatch role I attended a meeting recently of senior health professionals. Could I follow it? When I get out of my meetings culture depth, one of my quips is:- is there a GOT? Eh? Glossary of Terms, say I wryly.
My first NHS foray, five or six years ago, found me immersed in "deep dives", "heads up" & "going forwards". I think that's where I first had to "square circles" & "touch base" via "networking".
Anyway, I find myself amongst these professionals, some "proper" doctors & other well paid top cheeses. Now I've got two degrees, have occupied quite high up roles across various public agencies, but could I follow it?
As well as the "we must operate more collaboratively" (but on my terms), there were the other games that people play: name drop, article read, conference attended etc.
I know we all do it, every walk of life, professions, hobbies have their own patois (get it?), lingua franca, acronyms. But are they designed as shorthand or excluding cultural mores? There are those who play "cow pat" bingo in their meetings, "dabbing" off:- granulate, triangulate, engage, win-win, synergy.
But in public people to people (careful) organisations, shouldn't our well paid, from the public purse, professionals be careful?
Anyway, got some College documents to read:- stuff from the AoC about Ofsted, & the QAA & FDAP. Might have time to look into TLA (not Three Letter Acronym!) including Functional Skills (not Key Skills) & progression.
Good luck & TTFN!
