Extra Special Chianti Classico Reserva 2009, £7.50, Asda
Extra Special is Asda’s own-label branding and under the ‘Rollback’ prices there’s apparently £1.50 off this tasty 13% example of Italy’s classic red.
Made in Tuscany mainly from native Sangiovese grapes it is soft and mellow with more than a touch of oak. Ideal with all kinds of red meat and especially winter casseroles it is also good value.
Extra Special Fiano 2013, £5, Asda
I’m a fan of Fiano, another native Italian grape that’s a pleasant change from the predictable white Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays.
This one is from an award-winning producer in Sicily and is full of lemon, passion fruit and ripe apple flavours. It is also 13% and ‘rolled back’ by £2 from the normal £7 it is a real bargain.
