Extra Special Viognier 2013, £5, Asda
Here’s a great example of how supermarket own-label brands can be excellent value. Apricots and peaches are the keynote of the Viognier grape which traditionally grew in France’s Rhone valley although this version benefits from the skills of the forward looking winemakers of the Pays d’Oc in the deep south. Alcohol 13% and what a price!
Signature Albarino 2012, £6, Asda
Albarino is a grape from Spain’s northern Galicia region (known over the border in Portugal’s Vinho Verde area as Alvarinho) with a peachy flavour quite similar to the Viognier above. This one, from the Rias Biaxas zone, is light, only 12.5% alcohol and shows why Albarino is growing fast in popularity across Britain.
