Cordorniu Gran Cremant Cava 2012, £6.99, Co-op
Summertime is sparkling wine time and there are lots of alternatives to budget-busting champagne. Italy’s Prosecco is fashionable but some Spanish Cavas are equally good and even cheaper.
Here’s one reduced from £10.49 until August 26. Three grapes, Macabeo, Xarello and Parellada, make an 11.5% fizz with lovely apple and almond flavours.
Chateau Sainte Marthe 2012, £5.99, Co-op
This French red is also down from £7.99 until August 26 and a good example of the modern winemakers who have revived the fortunes of France’s Languedoc region in the last 20 years.
Syrah (Shiraz) and Grenache grapes are blended with 5% of Mourvedre to produce blackcurrant and blackberry tastes with a touch of spice and 13.5% alcohol.
